Have an item I've designed and sought a patent on. I've contacted US companies that produce that needed materials and unless I purchase 5 tons they will not deal with me. Chinese producers will sell me as little as 1 ton at a shot and are willing to work on manufacturing and packaging my product at a price point that I can't even begin to match.

I'm aware of the risks of being ripped off and actually seriously debated on the extra costs associated with getting a patent. Has anyone here worked with a Chinese company to produce their product? A friend of mine developed some products several years ago but his experience is rather dated.

You might have better luck working with an importer or broker. They can help you with manufacturers, importing, and clearing customs.

They can help you with minimums etc.

For a brand new, unique product I'd be wary of Chinese manufacturers. They have not been afraid to copycat some big name companies, even opening fake Apple stores.

As SD4020 suggested there are people that know the ins and outs that can help you, and even paying them you are likely to be way ahead of what it would cost to manufacture here.

On the other hand, you should be able to find what you need here. I think you have looked at big companies that don't need the work, and will not mess with small orders. There are small companies around that are hungry for work if you search hard enough.

It seems that almost all the companies that produce a similar product are overseas. This product is simple but fills an underserved niche, while it is unique it wouldn't take much for companies to make something similar and my biggest advantage is getting to the market firstest with the mostest.

For a smaller order type, you might have better luck here in the states. No worry about treading in black waters. Much quicker turn around time as well, and higher quality standards. They can also help you out in cost reduction and resolving glitches that your product may encounter. You'd be surprised how cost effective some of these U.S. manufacturers have become. If your willing to wait up to 6 months for your product to be made, China is cheaper, but if there are any problems that went unnoticed, your looking at possibly a year to get your product ready for sale.
