In regards to non personal correspondence, how long is acceptable to wait? My example is this:

I went to a lawyer for a consult on Monday morning. We concluded that a letter should be requested from a business, so that I have some record of the issue in writing. I'm being a little vague, but the details don't matter. The lawyer said she's send an email for this request and cc me. It's been 2 days and I haven't gotten an email. How soon should I follow up?

As soon as you are uncomfortable. There are no rules.

"I" would have followed up with the lawyer the very next day (and they better have a good excuse). Then each day again until I was satisfied. If I was not satisfied, I would go in person. If that still fails its time to end the arrangement and find another lawyer.
