Staples Inc. (SPLS), the largest U.S. office-supplies chain, will close as many as 12 percent of its North American stores and cut as much as $500 million in costs as online competition continues to hurt sales. The shares fell.
I feel bad for those "rank & file" employees who will lose their jobs. But, it is a management problem. I visit the Staples on occasion in my area and it is severely understaffed (2-3 employees serving customers on the weekend and customers walking out because they are not being served or attended to). The upper management at this chain has no clue how to run a retail operation.

I used to go to Staples for a few office supplies, and though they sell computers the staff there is useless compared to even Best Buy. We get our paper and printer cartridges at Costco now, other office products from Amazon. Since most everything is now done electronically office supplies are becoming less and less needed. It's becoming like video stores, and the old computer stores, obsolete.
I like Staples, but they're more expensive than Office Depot on the stuff we typically buy, so I don't use them.
Quill is also pushing hard to get business from both Staples and Office Depot. I get a call at least once a week from them. That's probably also affecting them.
Does anyone think they will last? I like Staples personally but people (40 years old and younger) don't like to go to stores anymore. Fact.
Depends on how they adapt to the market. I slightly prefer Staples to Office Depot, though since Office Depot is usually closer to me that's where I go for ink cartridges.

It's really just a shift, the online store hire more technical people (paid more than retail) and warehousing/shipping people (again, paid more than retail) so overall it's good for the economy, just not for those that get laid off and have only retail experience.

Quill is owned by Staples.
