1. Owning a business is highly demanding and uncertain, especially in the first few years. If you don't have a strong and supportive spouse, one who can weather the inevitable setbacks, then don't even think of starting.

2. You will not have a reliable income for quite a while. So the spouse who earns a steady paycheck will be a godsend.

3. As the business grows and develops, you may need a trusted person to help administer matters. If your marriage is strong, your spouse will always have your back and be looking out for your mutual interest. That doesn't mean that your spouse is the Co-Owner or that his/her opinion should take precedent over trusted, valuable employees. But he/she will be a valuable sounding board nonetheless.

4. If things look iffy, shelter your assets by putting the house in his/her name. That means he/she shouldn't be a shareholder.
