You make money by being good at SEO, and having clients willing to pay for your services.
Exactly i completely agree. I've been in then business for about 6 months now and i was lucky enough to have someone put their trust in me and teach me everything i know so far.
If your having to come here and google how to make money with SEO you have quite a learning curve ahead of you. I would recommend not only educating yourself on SEO onsite and offsite strategies but also start your own blog so you have something to practive on/with. I'd also recommend checking out PPC or Adwords management.
Actually SEO is huge for learning. There are lots of points for becoming SEO expert. If you want to learn SEO, first you have to understand search engine algorithm and basic SEO types.
Well really you need to learn Google's algorithum. Then maybe Yahoo. The rest are peanuts of search engines.
You do not need to know SEO, you just need to know how to sale the idea that you know SEO, as I am convinced half the people out there advertising for SEO do no good, and the other half overcharge for an hour or two of work every month.
As others have said you have a steep learning curve, and then you need to spend time staying up to date every month, and you are entering a pretty crowded market. As a business owner I get close to 20 calls a week from people selling SEO services, personally unless it is something you love to do I would stay out of it. There are plenty of other ways to make money than trying to learn the whole system of doing things, then learning how to sale it, and than actually being able to get paid.
One thing I would do if I had more time on my hands, and wanted to take the time to really learn it, would be to get into reputation marketing, it is kind of an online publicist type position making sure that all the good stuff said about you goes everywhere, and all the bad stuff is at least answered and handled correctly. I have only heard of a handful of companies currently doing it, and their fees are outrageous.
