You make a good point, not only do you need huge traffic but something like a viral video will get you one time traffic but to continue monetizing and making money month over month you need a consistant engaged readership or viewership which is much more difficult than a one time hit.
I'm also surprised by how many people think they are just going to overnight become some internet celebrity in their niche.
one category people are specifically niever in this regard is the whole pickup artist or PUA community. Everyone has an ebook, everyone has a youtube channel. everyone thinks they are this player and people should be sucking up their advice. There's one particular guy rooshv who personally I think is kind of a doosh and a jerk but one thing I will say for him is he is a great marketer, has done a great job of getting a cultlike following and essnetially his business is traveling around being a player and picking up women and reporting on it and making videos sharing stories and giving advice to other guys, he also runs a forum where people discuss. I'm not really into the pickup stuff though I will say their forum has some good articles on business, self improvement, etc.
Anyhow I commonly see his readers be like I'm going to go travel eastern europe and party and start a blog and do you think I"ll be able to make like 2k a month and support my travels? This is people starting from scratch who apparently have little to no experience or knowledge of blogging, writing, SEO, affiliate marketing who think people are just going to tune in to be a part oftheir life week in and week out or day in and day out.
