This is like the 30th Wal Mart thread on City Data in two weeks. They're closing down some under performing stores, big deal. I suppose they should pull a Kmart and keep zombie stores open. The ignorant will think that Taget is doing well, but remember last year Target bailed on Canada closing 133 stores and closed another 13 stores state side and canned 1700 people at corporate.

Comparing Walmart and Kmart, let alone Target, is not even an apples to oranges comparison. More like apples to bananas. Walmart is "kind of" a big deal in the scheme of things retail.

In the grand scheme of things Wal mart closing these small under performing stores was a fart in a tornado. They're still making money where's Amazon has only had what two profitable qtrs since inception

No question about it I agree. I will say however, that the 10,000 jobs are tough to lose. Contrary to popular sentiment, not all of those were min wage positions. I will be watching amazon news this week. They will be reporting earnings.

Too many of these vacant mega-stores sit around for years destroying neighborhoods.
If another company buys a property from Walmart's landlord of that location, the new owners would still have to honor the lease. If other tenants are interested, Walmart would likely do a sublease.

Commercial leases often last decades. Here are a few of their lease terms.
