For the original question though: go to garage sales with a smart phone, look up everything you see on ebay completed (sold) searches, and don't buy anything you can't triple your money on. Repeat.

$500 is enough to start a lot of different service based businesses if you already have transportation.

Not easy, and most can't wait it out long enough for profits to build enough to actually live on, but you can do it if you have the time and other means of taking care of yourself.
