Would like to buy a small business but will need an accountant to check the books anyone got any idea what I should be paying for this service

Will depend on the market rate per hour in your area. My husband does this for a living.

Will also depend on the level of "look over" you are wanting... are you looking for just a sanity check or an audit with an opinion... also are you asking them to establish a value for the business...

Without know the above I'm going to say get $3,000 in your mind then go up or down from there.

Worth every dime, too. I considered expanding my business by purchasing a similar business in another market. The income statement looked good and the balance sheet looked good.

So, just to be sure, I paid an accountant to look over the books. He found a rat's nest of stuff. Almost all of it was just sloppy bookkeeping, and was not an attempt to hide anything from me, but it affected the financial picture enough for me to walk away. That saved me close to $300,000.

My husband does this for a living also. PM me more info and I'll give you an idea - less than other figures on this forum.

He has been self employed as a CPA for 22 years. We are in Florida.

He does this, also audit work, all the time.
