Why does it seem like the long distance moving company business still generates so many consumer complaints and problems? Virtually everyone I know (yeah I know this is anecdotal) who moved a long distance has had trouble with the movers...misquotes, added on bullpoop costs upon arrival, extreme lateness, no updates, on and on and on. Simple Google searches and a look at the General Moving section here supports my observations.

Other industries have grown up, evolved...why haven't the big van lines? They still seem like a bunch of shady operators. Is there something about that service that engenders that kind of behavior?

Because there are several players involved and all of them are independent subcontractors basically and corporate doesn't really care much since all they do is take money right off the top.

Your experience mostly depends on your truck driver.

Yes, this. We moved to another state and the driver was a good guy, even slept in the trailer with a gun by his side to protect our stuff. The people doing the lifting at both ends were just day laborer types hired on short notice, and not exactly what we expected from a big name mover.

We recently moved a thousand miles away. Rented some pods and a flatbed truck and family members drove the pods to our new home. No big problem. And, surprise: nothing missing or broken.

You ever talk to your average moving crew? Unless you've got some college students on your hand trying to earn cash over the summer, you're not dealing with the brightest bulbs in the chandelier.
