Yup, depending on how large the yards are in your area, you could probably get started for under $500. You can easily make $60 or more an hour cutting grass, trimming shrubbery and putting out mulch/pinestraw.

Always put in the max that your employer will match. If its 5% do 5% if its 10% do 10%. You can also have a separate IRA account and input money there too along with your spouse. I think the yearly max is about 18k. That would include any money you and your employer put into a 401k/403b.

For example, if your employer plan with match is 10k per year, you can input another 8k into an IRA, so can your spouse. You will want to double check the limits on the IRS website and/or ask a CPA. I'm just trying to point you in the right direction.

Wrong. Stop giving just generic blanket advise. You have no idea what our talking about.

401K $18,000
Roth IRA $5500

Grow some dope in your basement.

A couple hundred a month worth of electricity per 1000 w light, some plant food, and labor and should be able to produce $1,800 - $2,400 per month per 1000 w light.

At your age, buy 4 rental houses. Better yet, start first by buying a 4-plex. That's the largest apartment building you can buy on a conventional mortgage (you don't need a commercial mortgage for a 4 plex, if you live in one apartment. Live in one of the apartments yourself for FREE, so you can reinvest the money you'd otherwise pay to rent somewhere else. Set rents high enough on the other 3 apartments that you cover all costs at a minimum. As the place is paid off over the years, you start getting a positive cash flow. So, now you are living for free, and building equity for the future. That's a pretty good start. It's active management also (you are live-in manager), so the 3 apartments can be depreciated over time on your taxes.
