I use Facebook ads all the time to promote a musical arts organization that must recruit among a tightly-defined demographic. Incredible bang for the buck if you are good at defining both the area and demographics.
I use Facebook ads. Like any form of advertising it's no silver bullet. You have to test, test, test until you get it down. Google ads are more challenging as you "bid" for top positions on keyword searches. Most of the larger companies dominate this space.

I switched from mostly google ads to mostly Facebook. The key to FB ads is defining your audience, listing interests and not showing to people who don't fit your target market. I may work with one of the ad people just to learn a little more about how to fine tune what we're doing.
