It has been a bad week for robots in the San Francisco Bay Area.
A Silicon Valley company that used robots to make its pizzas closed this week, and three coffee shops in downtown San Francisco that used robots as baristas also shuttered.
Zume Pizza said it is cutting 172 jobs in Mountain View and eliminating another 80 jobs at its facility in San Francisco. Zume Chief Executive Alex Garden made the announcement in an email to employees Wednesday, the Mercury News in San Jose reported.
I don't know about these businesses, but I will say that I absolutely love my robot vacuum cleaner. Every day when it docks itself and I hear the little "beep" I literally say out loud, "God I love my Eufy" (the brand name of the robot vacuum cleaner I have).
And I'm among the last people you would think of to defend this type of technology as far as actually using it myself.
So, is automation good or bad? Well, there were a lot of horse handlers who were put out of work when people started buying cars instead of using horse and buggies that they owned or rented.
Strange article. The title states that robots are out of work, implying that robots can't do the jobs as well as people or that they can't do the jobs. But when you read the article, the businesses are really changing their direction and are not dissatisfied with their robot workers. People were also laid off. And for Cafe X, there is no real explanation why they closed their store. The article points out that robots have been very effective and they are very popular with businesses.
I think that the author selected an inappropriate and misleading title for this article.
somewhat unfortunate, but it's true that automation is going to be the next technological disruptor.
And it's going to be hastened by the buffoons calling for high minimum wages. In my state, they're trying to raise it from $9.50ish to $17.00. Retailers are already installing self checkout for new stores, what's going to happen when you push minimum wages through the roof? You may benefit 1 person, but leave another 4 people out of jobs completely
