I found this forum, because someone else had asked a similar question. However, the answer received, didn't quite work for us. We are a small business in California and we have a wholesale license. We need to buy some very specific things, (ribbon, packaging, candy) However, we can't even figure out where to begin. When you google 'wholesale ribbon' you get a middleman who won't give up who they're doing business with. Same with everything else we need. It's become quite the conundrum for us, as we just want to order direct, then create our items for sale.

So our question is, where do we find a list of distributors that carry/make the items in question? It seems sorta ridiculous to me that we have to pay some website $50 to gain access to a list that we'll only need once. Is there no way to find these distributors unless you're big money?

Thanks in advance!

You buy a single item at retail and look on the packaging. It may have their direct distributor or their own factory info listed.

As an FYI, a "wholesale license" just lets you buy items tax free that you'll be using for manufacturing of completed items you'll be selling. There is no right or guarantee you'll be able to buy products at any discount. If you're not buying at quantities worthy of a discount, you'll just have to do with the middleman.

You probably don't even have to buy the product, just look at the package or search online to find out who the manufacturer is.

Be aware that most suppliers will have minimums once you qualify to purchase wholesale from their companies. Many require industry references.

How much do you need? Is this going to be more of a craft type business? You may simply want to use the coupons or sales at Hobby Lobby for the ribbon.

She goes through about 50,000 yards of ribbon each year. She started off at Hobby Lobby, but in order to compete with the other people making similar items, we're just looking for places to cut costs.

Thanks for the info. I never really stopped to think that the direct manufacturer was who we needed to contact. Some of the spools we've purchased, have no information whatsoever printed on them.. so It will take some investigating. I'm so used to dealing with large distributors (like Southwest Traders) that finding someone little has been mind boggling.

Have you tried something like this:

Showroom - Apparel Products - Ribbons

Wouldn't be surprised if half the items you already buy came from one of these manufactures. Many of these places private label supplies under a craft stores name.
