I need to set up payroll for 1 or possibly 2 employees. Any recommendations? I know Quickbooks has payroll, but it's fairly expensive for my needs. Does anyone have experience with some others such as Patriot Software, SurePayroll, or others?

I had a business account at Bank of America and they had an online payroll service that I used for my small business. Not sure if they still do. It worked very well for me.

I used ADP for several years when I had 4 employees. They delivered the paychecks and W-2s at the end of the year, the rest was done online. Probably too expensive for 1-2 employees. I did my own when I had that few.

What's considered expensive?

Just a quick google search shows that the entry point for small businesses is around $30/month for 2 employees if you look at a SaaS.

I'm sure you can get a software package that installs locally. But I'd say while the upfront cost may seem much lower. The support/maintenance you potentially have (troubleshooting, backup, computer/server, etc.) can wash any savings out.
