I have my own website but have never been able to place top 10 in the search engines. I have read about SEO and even tried to optimize to achieve better positioning without any results.
Can anyone point me to the right direction? I really don't know what I am doing wrong. I am not a professional developer, I am self taught, but have been writing html for years.

Any help will be greatly appreciated..

Please don't post your site but you can put it in your profile, thanks.

That being said, there are tons of sites that explain how to do SEO. I have six sites and manage about ten for other people and every site comes up first and second page. I have never spent a dime but it did take time. If you want to get on top quick, you can pay for Google Adwords. In addition to SEO, you should frequently submit your sites to search engines, include good content and exchange links with sites that are affiliated with what your site is about. After doing all of that, send links to your sites with every email you send out to people and have everyone you know search for your site and click around on it. If the search engines think your site is relevant because they see that people are going to it and staying on it awhile, they will rank it higher. Good luck!

Before you get into SEO you need to know how to do Keyword Research and that means finding the keywords that people are searching for and using them to your SERP's Search Page Rank Page advantage.

Take the main keyword(s) for your site and use Google's keyword tool to find how each keyword ranks. And of course it takes a bit more than that but I can't list it all here.

The key with doing SEO correct involves keyword research, website coding, quality link building, and quality and information content on your site. It does involve a lot of work for it to be done correctly.

However it is best to take a look at your site to see for sure what your site needs to concentrate on before making recommendations.

If you need assistance, I can assist you.

A good place to start with a strategy is websitegrader.com

It's not perfect, but it's a really good place to analyze your website for all kinds of criteria, and it even makes suggestions.

I wouldn't pay for an SEO service - better to teach yourself how to fish so you can grow and not be dependent on a third party for such an important part of your business. I can help you as well, if you'd like to send me your site in a private message. Looks like you have good volunteers here, I would take advantage of that.
