BOSTON, Mass. (September 1, 2008)—Direct-to-consumer advertising may not be giving big pharma such a big bang for their buck after all. Despite the billions spent on bringing drug marketing campaigns straight into patients' living rooms, such strategies have a modest effect at best—and in some cases, no effect at all.

Billions of dollars going down the drain.

It's not the most enticing thing in the world when you're hearing dire warnings about severe side effects over soft dreamy music.

I always said pharmaceutical companies wasted billions advertising to us peasants. It' not like we can buy them. What is their goal? It's not like we peasants can go to our doctor and tell them we want these drugs. The doctors have some pretty fat heads and would not enjoy a patient making suggestions. A typical answer from the doctor might be "if you think you know so much about your treatment then why did you come here"?
