Hi,

I wanted to form a sole proprietorship. I looked a Legal zoom. THis costs about 100$. I am in CT and I want to register a name of the company.

Is there a cheaper way to do this? Should I just call some entity of the state?

Thanks!

You should be able to form a sole proprietorship yourself much cheaper at your county courthouse - check your county's website.
Alternately you can form a LLC (Limited Liability Company) at the state level - costs $120 in Connecticut

I just file a schedule C for federal income tax purposes, work in my own name, so no need for DBA at the state level, and report myself to the county and municipal authorities, cost around $100 per year.

As mentioned, you can set up an LLC, costs around $150 per year depending on state (I think California around $1,000), set-up cost depends on whether you did it yourself or ask a lawyer to do it for you.

Good Luck!
