For example, a catering business is very personal in the sense that the business owner literally has to put his/her face in front of people all the time to introduce their food, earn trust and generate business. Also, because it is personal, the business owner cannot sell their food online.

In contrast, a business such as selling perfumes is impersonal because one can sell perfumes without putting his/her face in front of people by using either retail outlets or online. Also it is impersonal because the product they sell (in this case, perfumes) is not considered a perishable. Products such as cakes or foods are perishable.

So can any of you suggest businesses that are impersonal? I have to say businesses that deal with perishable products are very personal. In many cases, the owners can be held liable if someone ate their foods and gets ill. Any ideas? Thanks

I'd have to disagree. Yes you can buy perfume online but most perfume sales are personal and face to face with Avon, Mary Kaye, and dept store reps who try to build rapport & relationships and upsell.

Most perishable food is bought at supermarkets where the only interaction is the cashier or the "please use the pin-pad device" of the self checkout.

Online sales of electronics & books is a good example where items can be sold for less and take market share from bricks-and-mortar stores with sales staff.

Even water well drilling is personal. We remain friends with most of our customers.
