Schwarzenegger seeks to create high-speed demonstration train between L.A. and San Diego - latimes.com (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/politics/la-me-high-speed-rail-20100612,0,5073909.story - broken link)

Governor Schwarzenegger is asking for a demonstration train to be ready in 5 months between San Diego and Los Angeles. As the article points out, there is no way that the rail line can be ready by November but perhaps the light-weight European train can be demonstrated. The only downside is that the route won't allow high speed by November since there are road stops all along it and a train traveling 220 mph would be a disaster if it hit a car.

It's great that the funding is in place and work is starting on the bullet train from SoCal to the Bay Area!

The bonds for construction have already been approved by CA voters, while it is arguable that the bonds are enough to cover the project, there has been no additional burden placed on the taxpayers so far.

The bonds approved so far will be lucky to pay for the red tape, bureaucratic turf fights, and legal challenges. Forget actually laying any track with it.

The way California handled the bay bridge, I cannot wait to see how long and over budget the railway will be. 100 billion does not sound out of the normal given union labor costs, local and federal redtape, delays, environmental protesters ect

People who leave California often do it for personal reasons like being unwilling to do their part to help the state get control of mass transit. Maybe in 100 years Arkansas will have a bullet train

Well Well Well , so Arnold wants a Train by November eh? On what route? The Max allowed over a Crossing is 120mph , or at least in the Northeast , you need Electrification and other things to do it properly. If the route is too curvy , it will need some straighting.........so how much will Cali HSR cost? Whats Ridership Projections?

To be the big showoff region , the FED GOVT is upgrading the NEC to true HSR / extra Capacity at a cost of 52 billion $$ , as well as feeder lines. The NEC Upgrade should be done by 2022 and be used daily by 700,000+. Currently is used by 400,000+ all agencies added.

When i totaled all the Projects for the Master Northeast Rail plan i got 60 billion $$$ , funded mostly by secure state / fed $$$. Supposed to be done by 2030. On Top of that the all the planned Northeast Commuter , Light & Metro Rail projects will cost around 140 billion $$$ and take 2 decades to build. Since they will be built in phases. On top of that we have many Train Manufacturing plants , so its less to purchase them. I think theres 8 across the region and 10-20 planned for this decade to keep up with demand.

What does this mean for Cali , your system will look small and pathetic compared to ours. small , and weak. and will built slowly. NIMBY's have less power here then they have there. I guess nimby's don't understand there antics drive the cost up further. That might all seem like huge $$$ , why pour billions into Transit / Rail for one Region but our GDP is larger then Cali's and we have more ppl then Cali......

Getting back to cali , you need to get your funding lined up or let china build it.......otherwise your heading down a road of trouble.....
