I refused to have one installed. Don't know how long I'll be able to hold them off. Even so, in the past 2 months our electricity bill has sky rocketed! Our bill this month was $650 - and that was after their "winter gas savings" of $16. Like someone else mentioned, they will just keep raising rates to discourage use. Really? Let's see....there is very little to enjoy these days since the CA economy has tanked. Now I can't even be warm? Geesh.

$650.00 a month for electric use is crazy. Are you sure they are reading the meter correctly ? Double check & if they are right then you're not conserving energy.

In the past 29 days i have used exactly 99 kwh. Since feb 11th i have used 161 kwh. My daily avg is about 3.5 kwh & i bet my 15 yr old fridge accounts for a min of 2.0 kwh daily. I was suppose to get a new free fridge but the company who handles it never showed up as planned or even called me to explain why. I sure miss the old dial mechanical meter esp with summer just around the corner. Today its suppose to hit 92 degees but be cool by sunday (maybe).

It's hard to say for sure but I'd guess my bill went up 10%-15%. Even if we assume the smart meter is accurate (which seems open to question) the electric company seems to have used this as an opportunity to effectively raise rates. They now charge higher rates based upon real time market demand yet, for some unexplained reason, off peak/low demand usage remains the same price. Shouldn't off peak power usage be cheaper than before since on peak usage has increased in price? Other wise the bastards just effectively raised rates on us.

Utility companies are in the business to provide a service & make a profit. Its just the way it is.

True for many... some areas have municipal or co-op utilities and for profits granted a monopoly must still seek and receive rate approval.

My very good friend severed on the PUC for awhile... he said it was an interesting experience and he's glad to be no longer associated with it.

I just got my new bill. I used 94 kwh for march 2011. My new charges are $8.68. My daily electricity usage this year is 3.24 kwh. Last yr was 1.66 & 2 yrs ago was 2.69. I have conserved more last month then i ever have. This proves my old meter was slow. I expected my electric bills to be higher due to the smart meter. Oh well...
