I think SF is a much better city for young professionals. Santa Cruz is good if you are granola, or a surfer, or a nature junkie..or if you're an older person and want to mellow out. For a young professional it can be incredibly boring. No great shopping, no real nightclubs, not much diversity compared to places like SF and SJ, limited restaurants, and a VERY small selection of potential mates to chose from. I grew up there, and its paradise for a kid (if you ignore the meth heads, skinheads and gangbangers...i.e....two people just got shot in SC last night, in separate and unrelated incidents).
