Can anyone give me some honest info regarding Redding? Example...Cost of living, quality of life, crime, pollution, etc...The enviro-map shows alot of hazardous waste near that city. Is this the breeding ground for 2 headed children??

All I remember is HOT, HOT, HOT. My folks lived 1 hour east of Redding in Whitmore, but as they got older it became a long drive to the drs and stuff. Sorry haven't been there in quite a while. Good Luck. I love the country. Lots of untouched land east of Redding.

Iron Mountain is the #1 super fund site in the US... years of copper mining..

Please do a search.. I, along with others, have written extensively about Redding..
yes its hot,,, very hot,, yes it rains in the winter,, and yes it has some of the best kept secrets as well in California,, as well as reasonable real estate prices (cali wise)

Default Redding???

Redding huh.... HOT! HOT! HOT! Not unusual to reach 115 - 118 in the summer a few times. Short spring and fall and a wet winter. It rarely snows in Redding usually once per winter and it melts off in a day or so.

The only good thing I can say about Shasta County and outlying areas is the outdoor recreation is to die for. After we move we will visit the area for recreation purposes only.

I have lived in Anderson (10 miles south of Redding) for 7 years and plan on leaving next summer. My husband and I have 2 children, 5 and 7 and can't wait to get out of here.

Cost of living is high -vs- the wages. Depending what line of work you are in you either make or you don't.

Small town mentality - big city attitude from what I have gathered.

No 2 headed children but lots of undesirables.

As far as the enviro map I can't help you as I have never checked it out.

Crime ... Lots of pot and meth. If you have a family I would take a look at megans law as the sex offender count is higher here than anywhere I have ever seen.

Hope this helps

Default don't do it

I think Redding is one of the worst bigger citiy in this state. Lots of drugs, I think the highest amount of sex offenders in the state, the hottest city, the area is depressing. Not too far from Susanville where there is a big prison and upon released are bussed and released in Redding when they have no where else to go which explains the High crime and drug problems. The schools suck too with a high dropout rate. Great camping, fishing and outdoor fun in Shasta and Lassen but that's not so much Redding.

I do have some friends that moved there a couple years ago. When we went to visit last summer it was 117! Yikes! Their air conditioning bill alone was over $300 a month easily. They do like the schools there.

i think it is a matter of opinion,i think the drop out rate anywhere is more the parents fault than the kids.i actually loved redding when i lived there and am heading back come oct.it does get very hot,but whisky lake is just down the street and it is beautiful, great swimming,boating,skiing,blue...very nice parks there for kids and adults...

Default About Redding..

I have lived here for 15 years and as far as I am concerned this place has FAR MORE CONS THAN PROS, especially after the year 2000. It was once affordable to live here with the typical 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 1 car garage going for $120K tops but since 2000 it has risen to a rip-off and false economy rate of up to $300K. There are NO jobs here to support that. This area is loaded with pedophiles, bigots, depressed people, too many police that have nothing better to do than write as many traffic citations as possible and scorching HEAT combined with way too much sunshine all year around. Relationships fail alot because of the not so friendly lifestyle to support a good quality of living, ie, false econmoy, poor job market, overcrowded places, standing in line EVERYWHERE you go and only one place for everything to shop at.

The only pros I see are lakes and mountains...but once again everyone crowds those places too. Its a great place for retired people or elderly people that dont want to be outdoors and dont care about recreation.

I visited Redding and was not impressed. Typical cookie-cutter town that doesn't have much to offer. The people I visited who had lived there for many years were selling their home to escape the intense summer heat and boring area.

Recreation did not play into their opinion of Redding because it is the day-to-day environment that really matters. No one goes out and has "recreation" all the time.

Employment was bad...mostly service jobs, low-paying jobs.

My DH goes there all the time to fly-fish. The fishing is awesome and the river is beautiful. We briefly considered moving there. Wouldn't live there if you paid me. Between the heat, sex offenders and meth problems there (you can't just buy Sudafed at the market, you have to get it from behind the pharmacy counter and they have a system where they can track how often you buy it) - just too many turn offs.
