Downtown Oakland, or Downtown SF or maybe downtown San Diego -- which ever one I can get the right mix of amenities, action, and relative in a unique space.

If money were no object? Clearly, I'd own several homes up and down the coast:

One in the Oakland Hills/Piedmont
One in Carmel
One in Santa Barbara
One in La Jolla
And of course, a cabin on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.

I am an Okie but have lived in Carmel in the mid 70's. Channel Island and Oxnard in the 90's. I have traveled the coast from S.D. to Washington state. In my option a nice small retreat near a coastal national forest would be perfect. Somewhere just north Scotts Valley up on the "Fault". Perhaps Bonnie Dune, Benloman, Felton or Boulder Creek. One then is only min.s from Santa Cruz, Carmel, Half Moon Bay and less then an hour from Palo Alto on the other side of the ridge. It's Heaven up there.

Great question. I have always found friendly people up there too. Wheatley

Even Bill Gates would say "I'm not sure we can afford this".

I already lived in Half Moon Bay back when it wasn't so darned populated. My wife and I use to do 3 day weekends all the time in Pacific Grove and Carmel, so I'd have to say at least 5 acres on a nice custom built home with lots of trees around me would do nicely off of 17 mile Dr. or such. That would work for me. Otherwise a similar homestead in Portola Valley would also work well
