The California chapter of National Association for Advancement of Colored People\ NAACP is under fire by 20 African American religious and community leaders for supporting the legalization of marijuana. Some religious leaders have called for the president of the California State Conference of the NAACP to resign.

"Why would the California NAACP advocate for blacks to stay high?" Bishop Allen [head of the International Faith-Based Coalition] said "It's going to cause crime to go up. There will be more drug babies."

The NAACP want Prop 19 to be passed so that the underclass will not be arrested for trafficking in marijuana citing that Black Americans make up 7% of California's population but 22% of marijuana arrests.

Bravo to the NAACP for backing Prop 19.

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition have said that our modern prohibition will only end once business groups, labor unions, interest groups (such as the NAACP), and other organs of civil society all unite against it, as occurred in the later years of alcohol prohibition, and the state of New York legalizing alcohol was a major step towards the eventual repeal of the Volstead Act.

I was surprised that an organization like the NAACP would even be interested in legalizing marijuana. Figured groups like the ACLU & Libertarians would be more likely to support Prop 19.

It's going mainstream. Even the Virginia Blue Dog Senator Jim Webb (one of the most conservative of all Democratic Senators) is heavily questioning marijuana prohibition. OC Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher has introduced a bill to move marijuana off of Schedule I.

Pretty much everyone who knows the score supports legalizing, or decriminalizing, pot. The only ones against it seem to be against it for illogical and emotional reasons. Or because in their life "it's always been that way" and change is scary.

I don't think it's surprising at all considering the quote you posted in your initial post. Special interests defend their interests, after all

Its a shame the naacp has endorsed this. I would figure they would endorse young black men being law abiding and being productive vs selling dope or smoking blunts and still living and gramdma's.

What a pity

good point, I am not sure what NAACP and pot have to do with one another.

When the NAACP endorse things, sane people tend to run in the opposite direction.
