If you're a total waterdog like me (love surfing, kayaking, anything involving water) and love being outside and being active and physical, would you live in San Diego or somewhere near LA like Malibu?

i'm personally quite familiar with SD but I've only been to the tourist parts of LA, so not too sure about the area and the surrounding burbs.

I'm an LA native and (drum roll......!!!) I pick San Diego!!! My cousin has lived there since the '70s and I've visited there often, and I'd gladly move there if I could afford to sell my L.A. home and buy a comparable home there. (Unfortunately you can't, Prop 13)

Move to SD if you can at all afford it. Pick LA as your second choice. SD is more laid back.

Check out Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. Or La Jolla if you can afford it, and good luck. That's where my aunt/uncle lived, LJ. I spent a good piece of my youth there, and loved it!

I've lived my whole life in L.A. I would send you to S.D. if you were my buddy.

Given that you're in the Valley, I can understand why you're so unhappy with L.A.

I'm an LA native currently in the Bay Area and planning on moving back ; and my personal opinion is that both LA and SD have their good aspects and bad aspects, some of which coincide, others don't. There is no such thing as a perfect place ; life consists of trade offs. It's hard to say which is better and which is worse, it all depends upon your priorities.

I've spent a lot of time with friends in Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach (in other words been there real often for years) and spent a lot of time with my cousin in Pacific Beach, and the attitude and atmosphere is a whole bunch more comfortable, casual and easy going in Pacific Beach (SD). Of course that's just one person's opinion. (Similar atmosphere otherwise.)

It's probably not germane to the topic but I haven't noticed any problems in San Diego that are anything but the same problems Los Angeles has but just not as bad as LA.

Well I am unhappy with LA although if I could afford PV or Malibu it would probably go a long way to making me happier. But most of my family and friends have moved away and now I have more to gain by leaving than by staying.

I'm not complaining about Los Angeles though, nor bashing it. Whether LA (or SD) is good or bad depends on who you are and what you want/like. I recommend that anybody who thinks they might like California should visit and see for themselves, and should move here temporarily as a trial to see if you like it. It's America! You can come if you like and you can leave if you like!

I'm an LA native and I also pick San Diego for the same reason. Laid back atmosphere! LA is so high strung and everything is Go! Go! Go! I'm not hating on my hometown...LA just simply does not fit my personality.

I was telling my sister a few days ago that I wanted to take a little trip down to San Diego like we did last year. Too bad money is so tight that we will not be able to make it this year.

I would definitely move to San Diego if I had the job and money for it.

Money must be really tight if you can't afford to visit SD from LA. It's only 100 miles or so (gas money) and they've got Motel 6 and other inexpensive motels. (Just don't utilize motels that have hourly rates.)

I would consider moving to San Diego if (1) I could afford property (NOT), and (2) if the state government (and voters) weren't psychotic and delusional.

But still, if you're going to live in California then San Diego is a pretty nice place. I've spent more time there than any place other than where I live (San Fernando Valley, L.A.).

We just got back from a 6,000+ miles round-trip road trip across the country. So, I'd think it's fair to say we're now tight on money.

When we go to San Diego, we would usually stay in places like Motel 6 or Super 8, but we don't just want to be there for a day or two. I think It would be nice to stay there for at least a whole week, and that can and has gotten expensive.

As for buying property in San Diego, or anywhere for that matter, I wouldn't. I personally prefer renting. I'm the kind of person who wants to explore new places all the time. I can imagine if I bought a house, just to move to another city or state a couple years later.

I own property in the San Fernando Valley. I'm selling, and I can't afford to live anywhere in California in any nice property so I'm leaving California. (Boo hoo.)

I love you all! I'll miss you...

Tried Humboldt County? Or the Sierras?

Majoun, I can't afford to buy another property in California because I can't afford the taxes. I have my Prop 13 here, now, but when I sell then anything more expensive loses the benefit, so I have to leave California. You can thank Prop 13 for my flight, although perhaps good riddance for me.
