how about newer architecture locations ? hows the next over cities? alot of times i find popular cities too districtfied and dense while the surrounding cities can be appropriate..

Santa Barbara is nice. A little expensive though.
Anything within the LA metro is very hustle and bustle.

Honestly, I'd avoid all of cali. They are facing a major management crisis there. Sacramento is destroying the state. Oregon & Washington are much better options. the climate of the NW coast is nearly perfect. Mild winters and really, not as much rain as people say there is.

So cal is nothing but a giant traffic jam, I am so happy to be away from that place.

LA, Orange or San Diego County? Coastal or inland?

Long Beach is relatively clean, has a mixture of modern and old buildings, is urban and cultural, is pretty laid back for an urban area, and has a decent beach and large nearby regional park/nature area. I think it's the best you're going to get considering what you're asking for in the major urban areas. Otherwise, Santa Barbara sounds pretty good
