Northern California is about the size of the state of Virginia, with less than a million people, a little more specific. Starting with, what are you looking for?

And what is your definition of Northern California? Some people call the Bay Area 'northern California' while other people limit that term to the parts of the state north of there and Sacramento. And even if you limit it to the smaller more lightly populated area, it's still big, with 1 to 1.5 million people.

Central California is Kern county north to San Joaquin county\ Stockton and Santa Maria to Monterey county or Santa Cruz. This area of California is sometimes considered "Northern California" even though it is closer to LA than San Francisco\ Sacramento.

Stay where you are. If you don't have a clue you don't belong here anyway.

Actually, it's probably larger than Virginia.

I was half joking, but it used to be defined as anywhere where if you said "The City" the locals assumed you were talking about San Francisco, which used to be the case all the way down to Bakersfield (perhaps partly because that's where rail service from the Bay Area going South terminated).
