I am from CT and taking a class in Half Moon Bay 9/22 - 9/26. Class starts at 8:00 a.m. How long will it take me to drive there?

About a half hour. Hwy 1 is a 2 lane road between Santa Cruz and HMB. Traffic is generally not bad.

It's longer than that, I'd say a little over an hour by taking Hwy 1 straight up. I've driven it and it's an awful lot of pretty nothing.

I drove this route on Monday. No traffic, smooth ride. The road is relatively flat, very few big hills, cliffs, turns or curves. Spectacular scenery very enjoyable ride. Many hidden beaches of all types, mostly deserted, no people just the way I like it sometimes. This 50 mile stretch has only 2 tiny towns between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay (HMB). Various types of beaches with rough to not so rough surf. Various sand types. Surfers, Kitboarders, windsurfers along with sea lions and seals. If you are looking for seclusion these beaches are wonderful. Just under 1 hour drive.

About one year ago, a mother and a toddler were taken by a "shorebreak" wave. The two were up on the beach about 25yds from where the waves usually break, but on this occassion a "sleeper monster" wave broke high on the beach taking the two down. A rip current sent them far out in a very short time. Other people noticed and rescuers were on the scene quickly to recover them. It was too late, though, they both died at the hospital. The mother was a very inexperienced beachgoer and on a whim decided to head for the beach that day with her kids.

This occurred at Montara State Beach, 3-5 miles north of Half Moon Bay, beautiful yellow sand - bowl shaped beach, huge cliffs and rocks framing the beach, strong surf.
