I think we all know about where it rates in the world but as for recovering, of course it may be, slowly, it couldn't go further down. tell all those people looking for decent jobs or jobs period, tell that to companies moving out of the state, tell that to people that keep seeing their taxes increase monthly while their benefits are being reduced and the state is going further south. Tell that to people who can not sell their homes for anywhere close to what they paid for them.

Don't count on it looking pretty good in the next 18 months (actually 2012 is only 15 months away. I certainly hope their is some improvement, I doubt it we be enough to make a huge difference.

Shame I can't rep you again

Pretty much everything I have read aside from partisan sites, rates Brown as the winner of the debate due to his sharp intellect and wittiness. LA Times, NY Times, San Francisco Examiner, etc.

"Brown showed a sense of humor and energy Tuesday night, while Whitman had a grasp of the facts but seemed robotic in her responses".

Next debate is Saturday in Fresno.

Meg: Texas Texas Texas I'm ashamed of my voting record

Jerry: I voted in this state and love this state and going to die in this state.

That for me pretty much sums up who won the debate. After all, despite California's problems, I too love our state.

Exactly. Jerry Brown was emotional in a way that assured Californians that "grandpa" is in charge. I really like him but am enough of a realist to know no one can solve all the problems of California.

Good post. I'd only add that Brown has always had a folksy style that speaks to the times. He may be the son of the ex-Governor but you never get the sense he's a son of privilege.

When he was Govenor Brown did NOT live in the Govenor's mansion but in an apartment. Brown knows and understands limits....that is something a real conservative should appreciate.

I don't vote on personality but on the issues. Yet, in this case the guy who seems most in touch with the people is also the best candidate...

Exactly, he can't solve all of the states problems. Realistically no one can in just one or even two terms, especially outsiders who know nothing about this states unique idiosyncrasies. Only a person who knows and really loves this state could even have a hope in fixing even a few of the problems.

Very true and a nice change. Usually the republicans have us beat in ther personality department but look where that's gotten us before? Now we have the one with the personality and the knowledge.

As a carpetbagger who works in northwestern California but resides (and votes) in southwestern Oregon, I'm just baffled. At the risk of starting a border skirmish here, why is it that Oregon -- with barely a tenth of California's population -- can come up with political candidates that seem so much more intelligent and representational of the ordinary citizen? Democrats are excited about John Kitzhaber, Republicans are excited about Chris Dudley; most moderates seem to feel there's a good choice on both sides.

In California it seems that everyone will be holding their nose with regard to the candidates themselves, looking the other way, and voting their party into office. 37 million people and this is the best you can come up with: Moonbeam and Nutmeg? Is it the celebrity effect: anyone without big money and name recognition is essentially locked out of the running? Is it that partisan politics have broken the electoral machine? Where are the good candidates? Where are the SMART candidates?
