I was an enlisted Navy airman with a RESCAP squadron (combat air rescue) flying off a different carrier in '67 when McCain was flying his first tour and was trapped in the Forrestal fire, then shot down later that year after switching squadrons to another ship (USS Oriskany). My squadron specialized in pulling guys like McCain out of the jungle and coastal waters of Vietnam when they were shot down. I assisted in 10 rescues in my first six months over there and through my full tour my own planes went down six times, with two of my pilots unrecovered. I know what these guys are like (tough enough) and what they went through. I am not a McCain political supporter but I have pretty much nothing negative to say about him -- other than: there's a LOT more damage to anyone who went through what he / we all did as pilots and crew in those years than meets the eye often times. I come from great longevity on both sides of my family. I have rebuilt my health since taking some serious damage. But I am not sure that it isn't going to shorten my life ultimately. What McCain endured, and what he has done since, is admirable -- but he hides the damage very well ... there's more there than meets the eye. When he picked Palin for V.P. I shuddered at the thought she would be in second chair. Always take your second chair as seriously as your first.

Fewer entanglements in running California? With the almost total dysfunction in the state, not so sure about that. Why anyone would want the governors job beats me. Rather like insisting on jumping aboard a runaway train.

I agree with you about age and McCain, I am not sure about Brown. He may have kept up with the times, I still would not want him as my governor. But that is a different subject and thread.

Bad news: he'd be the oldest governor in CA history. Good news: the oldest governor to date (assuming office at 69) lived to the age of 89.

Many would argue Brown's mental health is an issue.

I agree he is too old, and I wasn't thrilled that he got the nomination, but I'd still pick him over Whitman.
