Part of that depends on what you consider "an airport." If you have your own plane, you might be able to land on the airstrip at Hiouchi and walk to the redwoods. If you want a major international hub, then if would be San Francisco...followed by a 6-hour drive.

Medford, OR (MFR) and Arcata, CA (ACV) are probably the closest among the regional hubs. A 2-hour drive from Medford and about an hour from Arcata will put you into the park system.

The immediate coast is not a good place for fall color because it does not get cold enough in autumn. The redwoods themselves, of course, are evergreens. Most north coast color would come from the bigleaf maples, vine maples and poison oak. But that you'll start to see 10-20 miles inland.

An airport for private planes or commercial flights?

Which redwood park are you talking about? There are lots of them. Coastal redwoods or the giant redwoods in the Sierra foothills?

Redwoods stay green all year long.

This is directly from their website,

By Air
Regularly scheduled commercial flights are available to and from airports in the the following nearby communties:

Crescent City, Calif. (map)
Airport: Del Norte County Airport/Jack McNamara Field (CEC)
Carrier Info.: United Express operated by SkyWest Airlines
Nearest Information Center: Crescent City Information Center, ~4 miles from airport.

Medford, Ore. (map)
Airport: Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport (MFR)
Carrier Info.: Horizon Air, Delta Connection operated by SkyWest Airlines, Allegiant Air, and United Airlines and United Express operated by SkyWest Airlines.
Nearest Information Center: Hiouchi Information Center, ~100 miles from airport.

McKinleyville, Calif. (map)
Airport: Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV)
Carrier Info.: Horizon Air, United Express operated by SkyWest Airlines.

That's not the only place that has redwoods, you could also fly into San Jose and visit Big Basin. Or fly into SF and visit Muir Woods and other options. Infact the weather would probably be better at the both of those places than up north.
