Most of the people who earn more than $200k are either high level executives or professors of law & medicine (those have to be paid that much because they would've made even more in the industry). For a professor outside those two disciplines, 120k is considered good money, and you usually don't see that salary till after 40.

Healthcare, like Education... should be affordable and accessable to all citizens.

Too bad Americans don't get that.

And groceries keep rising as well, what is your point? I am anything but a strong supporter of the liberal Ca university system or any other liberal university system, but I do expect the educators like people in any business to be paid a decent salary and to get regular salary increases.

The keyword here is citizens. When you have a huge influx of immigrants (legal and illegal) who have little or no money, it's going to have an adverse effect on the economy. It's simple economics.

Too many people just don't get it, huh?

Did you look at the database, a lot of the professors make waaayyy over 200k, look at the top 20 list and beyond many professors make $700, $800, $900,000.

As pointed out earlier - almost all of these highly paid professors are part of a medical school. They seem to have a base pay in the $150K range, and "extra" pay of $500K. I have no idea what "extra" pay is.

I looked up some random non-medical professors.

Salaries in the UCSD physics department vary quite a bit, with a few older professors getting around the 180k mark and some struggling get over 100k.

George Smoot (2006 Nobel in physics) makes 160k.

Terence Tao does surprisingly well: from 210k in 2006 (before Fields) to 380k in 2008. But he seems to be an exception rather than the rule. Most professors in the math department of UC Riverside have salaries in 100-120k range.

It is extremely difficult to obtain a tenured professor position at a college or university, especially the UC System as the competition is fierce. In many colleges and universities, professors have to start out working part-time at multiple campuses just to gain experience teaching and conducting research as well as support themselves before gaining the tenured position at a campus. Universities such as the UC System, require professors to have PhD in their field which is a significant time and financial investment. To teach Law or Medicine, a professor has to have gone through law/medical school to become licensed to practice, which is an extremely expensive and rigorous process. Those earning top pay have likely been working at their UC campus for years as it is rare that anyone would start out that high. If anyone wishes to gripe about pay, they should skim from the top by looking at the salaries of the administrators and other bureaucrats.
