Yeah the pop-up sprinklers, that's what I meant. So over $100 a month on water? Yikes!! That's pretty scary.

I know I want a lawn and I now I know it is going to be work to have one.
Sigh.

With sewer fees, service charges, and minimum water usage the cheapest bill I can possibly have is 70 bucks. That's with no extra water but the standard allotment. So figure all the landscaping is 50 bucks more a month. The lawn alone is probably about 30 of that.

The cost of keeping a yard lovely is amazing in CA. It can be done but as I posted earlier at what cost? It really is sad because many of these older people in established nice neighborhoods take great pride in their yards. But they just cannot afford to pay the price and as Sassberto pointed out, the energy to keep their yards nice. I know it got difficult for us as our summer DWP bills were running around $1,500-$1,800 every two months. We did have an acre of lawn so that was costly but come on.....It was killing us!!

In CA I built my front yard from seed and back was sod. Total @5000 sqft. It was in Yorba Linda so it was not un-usual to see 80-100 degree temps most of the year. I watered twice a week 25 minutes a zone 5 zones. The yard looked great year round.
The way to keep a great yard is to fertilize. Scott’s has great products designed to be used year round. Go to the website and they will show you what to use and when to use it. It works, you just have to follow the schedules.

After some Marathon III sod at one of my places started turning brown, I had it replaced with "LA Turf" artificial grass. No more mowing, watering, weeding, etc. for at least 7 years or more and it looks and feels like real grass.

I think this may be the way of the future. We have similiar artificial TurfDirect out here in Colorado and I considered it. It is really expensive though. I think when I ran the numbers it would break even in eight to ten years or so. No water, no maintenance, etc.

I was at the Buffalo Bills training camp in Rochester a couple of years ago. They had this fake stuff. I put my fingers in it. I could not tell the difference. Amazing.

Maybe next time, when I'm a little fatter and a little older, I'll go with it.

Lawn care is easy to me, water, feed, water and mow, my lawn looks great, my back yard is big and my wife takes care of it. My Dad is 84 years old and his lawn is very nice. If you can't get water your not going to have a lawn but other than that it's not difficult at all.
