I know someone who works with California condors, and the lead-poisoning issue is a real problem.
Lead ammunition has been banned in California for quite some time, but the law isn't being enforced at all. It's very sad.

I know what you mean. I'm not sure when lead was banned but when I volunteered at Lake Merrit in Oakland, we would get birds, mainly geese, who weren't shot but ingested lead shot. They seemed fine, but any stress at all would trigger a reaction in which the birds would lose equilibrium. If this happened when they were in the water, they drowned.

As far as the law not being enforced I would have to diagree with that, if you are in a lead free area you will be checked if a ranger is in the area, I've been checked a few times. Remember lead is not banned in Ca. it is banned in Condor areas.
