Overall, its the city of San Francisco(By Far). After that, parts of Oakland and Berkeley and I think some areas Los Angeles have good coverage.

San Francisco, although for me the public transportation was actually better for us when we lived in LA than we lived in the (city of) San Francisco. The Bay Area is really good for commuter and longer-distance coverage, but options like BART have major coverage gaps, while SF's Muni has some major problems. It's still better than LA, but LA is definitely catching up.

Definitely NOT San Francisco. It may have been good 25 years ago however not in 2010. Bart is good but the Muni system is a disaster. Crime plus frequent breakdowns. A trip that is a 10 minute drive takes an hour on the bus here, especially if you have to transfer. I've taken public transit in every city I have lived in but in SF I 100% avoid it.

I don't drive to San Francisco anymore--it is unnecessary and expensive. The public transit is just fine. In Los Angeles, I spent three days there and only got into a car once--they are rapidly regaining the excellent public transit system they once had.

Sacramento's could be better...due to state budget cuts, our transit system stops operating at 9 PM. It's adequate if you live in the central city and don't need it at night, I guess.
