Hi;

We are from Canada and my wife and I will be travelling from Monterey to San Diego- we plan on staying in Carmel for 2 nights and then travelling down on Hwy 1 or 101 and sleeping in Camarillo for 1 night- is this a good plan? Is it too far to drive from Carmel by the sea to camarillo in one day while stopping off periodicall to view the sights on hwy 1? would appreciate any advice.

JZB

It is six hours without stopping. Stop three times for one hour or four times for 45 minutes and that is nine hours. Doesn't sound like it is too far. Six hours is pretty easy. Nine hours with all sorts of stops is probably easy too.

Hearst Castle will be a lot longer and that is pretty popular.

split the trip, stay in Morro Bay one night, eat at a fresh fish restaurant. Walk the fishing piers.

Question why are you spending the night in Camarillo outside of Oxnard?
Is it because it happens to be a mid way point? Much better places to stay along the coast than Oxnard.

Morro Bay, Pismo, Santa Barbara are much better places to stay. Stay on the Ocean and eat some fresh seafood as highlite suggested.

Here is a place I take the wife to on occasion when hitting the central coast wine areas. It is right across the street from the ocean in Cambria.

A Cambria California Hotel – The Best Western Fireside Inn

There are so many nice places to stop and explore along this coast. There are hiking trails, wineries, great towns to visit, kayaking, etc...
I hope you have more time than 3 days to explore.

I think. You should take highway 101, then highway five and highway 805. This could be seven hours and 40 minutes journey. In traffic this would take around nine hours and 30 minutes.

It's doable but I would prefer a slower pace so you can see the sights and really enjoy yourself rather then making a mad dash.

I agree with this. Taking the PCH (1) is going to take longer than taking the 101, as well. There will be parts of the road that they'll have to drive slow on anyway (unless they are insane), at least in the northern part of California. Haven't had the same issues with the PCH in southern California.
