Chico is a fun place to go to school, but a difficult place to settle down due to a lack of jobs. there are many bars around campus, and they all have drink specials every night of the week. I would say if your in your late 20's and not going to school it's not the place.

The college kids and party scene are only one part of Chico. It's also the central hub for businesses, restaurants and shopping for most of the surrounding areas, like Paradise, Magalia, Durham, Orland, Corning, Gridley, and even Oroville. Beautiful, uncrowded, affordable and a very nice area to retire to, but it's true, decent paying jobs are also pretty scarce.

Trying to get a good view of summer temps - the main weather source is the Oroville airport. How similar would the weather and temps be between Oroville and Chico?

I had a lot of family in the Northern Sierras/Lassen area, but it has been a very long time since I regularly visited.

They're pretty similar, with some parts of Oroville being slightly cooler than Chico due to elevation and the lake effect. Honestly though the differences are pretty negligible and from early July through the end of September it can be pretty brutal. Usually there's a 3 - 4 week period of 100 - 110 degree temperatures at some point during summer but for the most part it's pretty manageable.

Relocated here from the PNW, and unless someone's the type that's especially sensitive to heat, it's really fairly manageable in the summertime, especially since it's of the 'dry heat' variety. And the local perception, if not the reality, is that Oroville feels hotter than Chico (and Chico has a lot more trees anway). But move up by just a thousand to two thousand feet extra elevation into the nearby foothills communities, and there's not only more trees and shade, it's also noticeably cooler!

I'm not wild about the heat (anything about 100°), but I see that it tends to cool down at night, which balances it out. As long as I can turn on a fan and still sleep, I can always shift my day to take advantage of the early morning to be out and about and spend the afternoon indoors in the A/C working - or sit on the patio and run through the sprinkler every now and then....
