So I've been itching to drive up there and take some photos before the weather turns too terrible. Any advice on some good locations to take some shots and are there any particular vantage points that are better than others? Thanks.

You can get some good shots right from the highway. I don't know if the rest stops are open again. If they are, that's a good place to stop. I remember seeing a sign with an arrow marked "Mt. Shasta" but I don't know how far or where it goes.

I can't give you a specific location, but I've seen pictures of Mount Shasta that were taken from the east or northeast side of the mountain looking west, or southwest across high plains. That should give you a striking view of the mountain rising up from flat plains that is uninterrupted by intervening mountains. The picture I particularly recall was for Burlington Northern Railroad, so look for the rail line on the map coming down through Bieber and then figure out which highway you need to drive on.

Also, there will be stretches of blue sky weather even in the middle of winter so with careful weather planning it should be possible to get a good picture anytime of the year.

I live near Eureka on the coast and one day I took a nice long drive to Yreka just so I could approach Mount Shasta from the north. This was in the middle of August of 2007. The first picture was along I-5 just south of Yreka, the second was also along I-5 north of Weed and the third was at a rest stop near Weed. Sometimes on nice clear winter days the mountain can be seen at least 100 miles before you get to Redding. Mount Shasta is 14,179 feet high and is an active volcano.

Great photos, Dragonslayer! I took a solo road trip a few years ago. I went from L.A. to Reno, and then from Reno to Salem, Oregon. I ended up on the 89, which took me over Mt. Lassen, right through Lassen Volcanic National Park. What a beautiful trip! I'm sure I would have gotten to Oregon quicker using a different route, but the detour was well worth the extra time.

When I emerged from the forest, Mt. Shasta was looming right in front me, it seemed. I think I may have been in McCloud, a small town. Because the land around it is so flat, Mt. Shasta looks even more immense than it is. I'd love to go back again. Something about those wide open spaces really appealed to me.

You might want to take some pics of the Crags, also. They are north of Lake Shasta off I-5. Very Beautiful.
