I'd rather just require the educational institutions to charge students the same no matter where their residence is. Why discriminate against out of state students?

I'll make you a deal. Let's charge legal US residents the same tuition no matter where their residence is, and we can charge foreign nationals the same tuition.

Fair for everybody, right? Or otherwise you're discriminating against residents of the other 49 states in favor of people who are here illegally. That isn't fair!

So no, I don't agree with this court ruling.
I've not seen anything about college being "free" for anyone Gentoo. What are you reading?

is anyone else torn on this? i understand that it is not fair to kids from other states who are american citizens, but i don't think it is all bad either. illegal immigrants tend to be extremely poor, so giving the youth an opportunity to educate themselves and pull themselves out of the depths of poverty seems to be a pretty good idea. since the illegals aren't going anywhere anyways (due to their large numbers), we might as well give them a path out of crime and poverty. it costs us nothing if an immigrant chooses not to take advantage of this offer anyways. having said that, the subsidies to in-state students are pretty large and this would cost the state a lot of money. i would just hope that this would be an investment that would pay off in the long run.

FWIW, i am not a bleeding-heart liberal. i am looking at this strictly from an economic point of view, although there is a social impact as well. i'd much rather give a man a rod to catch his own fish.
in-state, hey let's go all the way, FREE education for illegals

Hey there's already at least one scholarship fund that's only open to illegals.

I'm eligible, but I can't seem to swing the same types of deals as a citizen that illegals can

Ok dude, despite how you feel about me, I have to give you props for that. I too am a liberal who feels the same way as you

I suggest you all step back and read "Breaking Through" by Francisco Jimenez. Time to open some eyes.
No, I do not get the same benefits. No one is championing for me to get help for college. I am told that I need to find a way to pay myself, period. I make too little to afford to, but too much for a free ride. Not fair!

Why? Because they were given a free public education and the opportunity for higher education, given them by the enlightened citizens of this nation.

Some of you would prefer that they be gangsters and drug pushers the usual result of being denied the tools to improve themselves and serve their communities.
No no no! That is not what we're saying. The problem I think most of us have is that citizens of this country do not have that same opportunity when it comes to charity. Wanna help the illegals? Fine but what about those of us who could have taken a similar path had we been offered the same assistance?

My dear Ceece; where in the post you quoted did I say anything about college being free?

You didn't say college is free but you did say this,
"No, I do not get the same benefits. No one is championing for me to get help for college. I am told that I need to find a way to pay myself, period. I make too little to afford to, but too much for a free ride. Not fair!"

I am generally pretty liberal (as you are) and I agree with your general view: illegal immigrants should pay the same as out-of-state residents.

That said, I don't see where this ruling cuts illegals a cheaper deal on tuition than you can get as an in-state resident.
