Basement? In Southern California? Do the neighbors' houses have basements too? If not, I wonder if someone dug out a fallout shelter for that house in the late 1950s.

LOL - no one in So. California we know has a basement but us. Actually our house was originally a 2 bedroom, one bath house. The basement was dug out when the addition was added about 26 years ago. The basement has cinder block walls, paneling, carpeting, 8 foot ceilings - one large room (it has been a guest room and then a play room over the years - now it is storage since our kids are all grown and gone) - there is also a smaller room that is probably 9 x 18 that has a built-in desk and a wall of floor to ceiling very sturdy shelves - this is our storage room and it is wonderful to have. None of the homes in this old subdivision have decent storage - we have tons of it - I don't know how I will ever have a home without a basement - we love it.
