I am thinking about going to Crescent City for a month (I've got a place to live) and volunteer at the North Coast Marine Mammal Center. Does anyone have any information or opinions about that place? Are the people nice? Volunteers readily accepted?

I'm retired and single in the high Colorado mountains, waiting for my house to sell in a really lousy market and have decided to just make something happen for myself. Get into some interesting adventures where I'm doing something. Am going down to volunteer at Best Friends in Kanab Utah next month.

I can't move yet and get adventures that way so I've devised this volunteer idea to get me out and about till the house sells.

Thanks for any info about the Center. Oh, and this is probably a silly idea, but if you have any interesting suggestions I'd like to hear them. If you were doing this type of thing, what exactly would you do?

There must be several hundred posts about the pluses and minuses of Crescent City. The "Search Forum" button is your friend. I applaud your idea of volunteering at the MMC-everyone I've known who has gotten involved has found it a great experience. The area is MUCH MUCH nicer in summer than in winter so I hope you're thinking of the sunnier months to do this. Good that you have a place. The motels there are kind of blah. If you want a different experience there are excellent RV parks in Smith River (Ship Ashore) and in Hiouchi (Hiouchi Hamlet) and I THINK there's one in Gasquet if you want a gorgeous commute along the Smith River.

The Marine Mammal Center is EXTREMELY small...my garage is probably bigger. The name makes it sound like a major facility, but it's really just a few cages for pinnipeds that are being cared for while they recover from injuries. Dr. Wood at All Creatures Great and Small veterinary clinic in Crescent City is affiliated with the center and can probably answer some questions for you.

Default Seals in CC

Thank you guys so much. And Brenda...that's great information. I'm going to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah next month and am looking for a volunteer experience for the end of May and early June. Perhaps the seal rescue isn't large enough to accommodate volunteers.

I'll get in touch with that vet and see what he says.

anyam22,
While looking for information on a tsunami alert we are currently under here in Crescent City, I ran across this site & your post. I've been a volunteer at the North Coast Marine Mammal Center (NMMC) for a few years now so I thought I could help answer some questions for you, so I went ahead and registered so I could reply to you. However, tonight my powers of observation seem to have gone out with the tide as I just noticed the date on this post.

Since I've already registered anyway, I thought I would follow up with you (on the off chance that you are still active on this forum) and see if you did end up joing us at the NMMC and if so, what your thoughts are about your experience?
I attached a few pictures of some of the areas favorite beauties just in case you never made it I wanted to show you a few things you missed out on, : )
