Clovis is a nice area with good schools. Pick a nice home in Clovis and enjoy your life in California

North end of Fresno and Clovis has my vote. Lived there most of my life. There is a trough of cleaner air that moves through there at 4pm daily, so I always preferred the north side of Fresno, particularly Woodward Park area, as the trough blows toward Clovis and with the population growth the last 30 years, well, air quality is deminished on bad days. That said, air quality there is ALL better than Fowler, Kingsburg, and anywhere near 99 south of there. Clovis schools are in Fresno north of Herndon Ave. and east of 41. Lots of choices. zip 93720.

Hi Derek,

I can work in either Central Valley, CA or Monterey County, CA. Is Central Valley as crime-ridden, smoggy, and undesirable as city-data seems to portray? I thought it would be an okay option b/c it is less expensive...but these posts make me think otherwise.

Well,

Keep in mind no place is perfect. So you just to weigh the pros/cons of an area to see if that is something that will work for you.

So your real question should be what are the pros/cons for me?

From your other post the coastal areas seem to meet most of your requirements besides cost. And affordability is one reason to consider the Central Valley over lets say the Bay Area. However, yes, there are cons.

I think Clovis is one of the nicest areas I have found in the Central Valley. It has nice neighborhoods and schools for the most part. And it sits just outside Kings Canyon NP which is beautiful.

The biggest deterant for me would be the quality of the air and the Tule fog. I don't mind a little fog. I just wouldn't want to have to commute in it too much. There have been some horrific accidents (huge pileups) because of it. But for me the biggest downside would be the air. I love the outdoors and wouldn't want to restrict my activity because of the smog. There have been many threads on here discussing this. Some say its improving. But I think it is still some of the worst air in the nation. Of course you can get away pretty quickly up into the mountains which is really a big plus.

Some friends of ours grew up in Fresno. And they were always heading up into the mountains going hiking, fishing, mtn. biking, etc... while growing up. Even the Sierra Foothills just outside Fresno are beautiful.

In fact I almost went this weekend to check out the Blossom Trail blooms happening right now. Here was last year at this time:

So perfect? No. But still a lot to offer for reasonable prices? I think so.

Derek

Glad to hear it Phil. Let us know how things go.

Nice shots as usual Derek.

I thought you might be interested in some photos taken around the area this last week by the Fresno Bee staff.

This link is a collection of Blossom Trail shots from just last week. You might appreciate the unique look of the 2nd photo, on a blog the photographer says it was a fisheye lens with a 10 second timer to allow him to try to get out of the shot (look close at the photo's 9 o'clock position, he didn't quite make it).

And this link is photos from an open house last weekend at the McKenzie Preserve, 3000 acres owned by the Sierra Foothill Conservancy outside of Fresno near Friant and Millerton Lake.

Possibly worth noting is the social/political climate, particularly in Clovis. If you lean conservative and are white, you should be fine. Anything other than that and you may not be comfortable in the area.

Clovis has a decent population of cowboy types, d-bags with lifted trucks, and bored, upper-middle class teenagers.

It can look nice this time of year. It looks less nice in summer when it's 100 degrees and the school can't let your kids play outside because the air is too disgusting to breathe. A lot of kids in this area develop asthma, and the hot, smoggy days, burning in the winter, and agricultural pollutants in the air do not help.

Just a heads up.
