What do you think here that is the most accurate source? I posted this thread up so that I'll predict more accurately. I won't have a poll, put just choose what the population of the cities in CA would be leaning to .

I'll give you stats right now, just wait. I need to access the thing:

I think Department of Finance is more accurate.

Default US Census vs. Calif Dept. of Finance

Not sure you can directly compare the two-as they serve differing purposes.

As I understand the respective roles, the Census Bureau is responsible for the nationwide decennial census counts, while the State Dept. of Finance (DoF) makes annual projections within the state of CA between those once/10-year censuses. Of course the primary purpose of the census is to determine national/state populations in order to "divvy-up" the 435 congressional seats/state.

I think the DoF projections are principally to determine per capita state appropriations for counties and cities within CA. Because they are updated annually, & based on a sizable statistical set, the DoF numbers would naturally be more current that the more dated census figures.

The DoF does "recalibrate" their data every ten years to fit the most recent census numbers, so the two estimates are related.

I think the Dept. of Finance has been more accurate historically.

Here's an article from last year discussing the issue a bit:

I would go with Dept of Finance, they don't use questionnaires like the census

Well, as Jaybee said, they're two different reports for different purposes. It's very conceivable that the DoF uses US Census Bureau figures for planning purposes.

Note: I worked as a enumerator conducting household interviews for the Census - and the data is used for planning purposes by many different agencies nationwide.
