Oakland and Sacramento downtowns are moribound. They're dead especially on weekends and nights with few exceptions. Oakland downtown is actually dangerous if you don't watch where you're walking, alot of doped thugs and homeless mentally ill hanging out in the area. Sacramento, you have alot of fights breaking with the exconvicts and homeless people at your face. It's so obvious. In Dt. San Jose, there aren't many violence going on. The best downtown: San Jose hands down!

thread getting more personal than a discussion about downtown areas...

BTW, I'll toss in a dark horse candidate, downtown Palo Alto.

San Francisco
Berkeley
Santa Cruz
Palo Alto
Burlingame
Oakland

San Jose and Sacramento stuck malls in their downtown, so they lose.

What's wrong with shopping downtown?

Anyway, I would also like to add Walnut Creek into the mix. WC has a very cool, walkable and pleasant downtown.

Another town is Davis. Their downtown is very nice, rustic looking yet vibrant.

San Rafael has a nice downtown area too. I love the density of buildings around the downtown area near Mission San Rafael Arcangel.

Alameda's 'downtown' area along Park Street is also one of the best-very very well integrated with the surrounding residential neighborhoods. I love the vibe there.

Mountain View also has a very nice, walkable downtown.

Los Altos has a nice walkable downtown area.

Los Gatos has the most apple-pie looking downtown in the Bay Area as far as Im concerned.

Lafayette also has a lot of activity in its historic downtown. Lots of restaurants and bars, lots of walkability.

Mill Valley has a very beautiful downtown-quaint yet elegant, in the shadow of huge trees.

Sausalito has one of the most scenic waterfront villages in the country-just stunning and super walkable...

Santa Rosa has a nice city core in my experience.

I wasn't aware of a mall in downtown SJ...... probably because there isn't one. Santana Row is inwest San jose And even if their was, I don't know how that is an automatic lose.
