My family and I are relocating to California, we have decided to choose Santa Maria because it will be close to my husbands job site. There is a townhome for rent in a gated community located across from Preisker Park, and I would like to know if it is a safe area to live in?

You want to live close as possible to Orcutt or in Orcutt. Santa Maria's population continues to grow, but it's the lower-income Latinos moving. Orcutt is where the wealthier families are moving. Avoid Nipomo too because they have had a growing lower-income Latino area.

Paso Robles and San Miquel are also having this problem in San Luis Obispo County. Templeton, Atascadero, Orcutt, San Luis Obispo (if you can afford it), and Arroyo Grande are the places still growing with nice neighborhoods. Most other areas have old homes or small homes.

Not a bad list, but I would add Nipomo and take out Templeton/Atascadero. Personal preference for better climate and less gang activity.

How does gang activity affect you personally?
