Who calls it Cali? And a question like that needs to be more for individual areas of the state.

Someone renting in the Bay area is going to have completely different answers from someone in the Inland Empire.

I'm in San Luis Obispo and pay $650 for a "studio" which I consider closer to an efficiency.

Where? What size house? Remember Real Estate 101 principle = location, location, location. Take that same exact house and put it in the midwest or south and it will be cheaper for this same reason. This has always been the case.

The thing is CA is a huge state with a large of variety of real estate ranging from cheap to outrageous. Rent is typically much higher in the larger metro regions nearer economic hubs (LA, SD, OC, SF, San Jose), especially closer to the coast and in good school districts.

Not considering subsidized apartments, the lowest rent around here in the Mt Shasta area of far northern CA would be about $450 per month. Those low-end place would be shabby but a bit more space than a studio. Some of them have great views of the mountain, and easy access to wilderness, but there's not much to do in the villages and not much work.

Why did you bother even to include an "Under $250" category? That slot could have been put to better use as an "Over $2500" slot.

There is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house with a pool, for rent on my street for $2400. 7000 square foot lot, 1500 square foot house, average middle income neighborhood.
