Rancho Santa Margarita: Safe, good schools, not too far from the beach, lots of family amenities, just below 5000 foot Saddleback Peak, bisected by the convenient 241 tollway, master planned, lower $/sqft than most of south Orange County, great community atmosphere and coordinated homeowners associations which share pools and parks, and very pretty.

Pacific Grove. It doesn't get mentioned much because it is nestled between Carmel and Monterey.

Needles, on the east coast of CA. Virtually no traffic. Cheap housing. Year-round beach weather. Clean, beautiful beaches. 2 Hour drive to Vegas.

Oakland CA by a long shot... its the biggest city in CA that gets no credit for any of its positives from people who don't live in the east bay.
