In this age of high tech, sometimes, the old ways work best. California's millions of acres of roadless areas and wilderness areas, mule strings are still used, whether for recreation or firefighting, mules and horses still have uses. The US Forest Service in California still owns and uses 150 mules, down from the thousands used decades ago, but still here, and still a vital part of managing the public lands available for you to recreate in.

Mules are how they used to stock the glacial lakes with fish until they developed the airplane drop method.

Love them golden trout.

Used a pack mules once to get out five mule deer our hunting party shot back in 1984 from the Carson Iceberg wilderness.

We go into Golden Trout Wilderness frequently,, all the small streams are pure Golden Trout, the Kern River has multi pound Rainbows,,

Back in my Firefighter days, there were several times out breakfast came in in hot cans packed by mules.. If there is an inversion the canyons smoke up and the helicopters can't fly, so the mules take over supplying the crews.

... And, I do prefer slow elk to venison... One must be a wise hunter to know what slow elk are.

LOL @ slow elk. Quit letting out the secrets of the back country would ya. A little slow elk is a tasty thing and tender young thing.
