Yup. That's the State of Jefferson for you. People who live there can FEEL when they're in it. The rest of the people are fooled by lines drawn on atlases.

I would agree about those places. Also, Crescent City is a NorCal coastal town that I would consider to be 'PNW'.

And yet many Oregonians consider Brookings, OR -- 28 miles north of Crescent City and across the state line -- to be "effectively part of northern California," so it cuts both ways.

I thought West Sonoma County, Mendocino and Humboldt had a PNW vibe and aesthetic look to it. Esp cities like Guerneville, Monte Rio, Occidental in Sonoma... those are the farthest south cities that had that vibe to me a bit.

Northern California, at least to me, is the region north of CA-20 as
that where it breaks free from the SF Bay Area and the Sacramento
Valley. Everyone has their own definition though.

As for the Pacific Northwest, seems only fitting that it be between
the Cascade Range and Pacific Ocean in Northern California, Oregon,
Washington and southern British Columbia. Hope that clears it all up
for everyone! ;^)

I agree with Grumbler.

"Northern California" (NorCal) is everything south of Highway 20 down to Highway 152 just south of Santa Cruz, not including Monterey.

Everything north of Highway 20 to the Oregon border is also "Northern California" but also included in the PNW.

Northern California is not the PNW nor is it Southern California; NorCal has it's own thing going and always has.

"Central California" is Monterey to just north of Santa Barbara on the coast and in the San Joaquin Valley down to Bakersfield, although historically, Bakersfield has always been part of Southern California. Santa Barbara is Southern California.

Culturally and weather-wise the far north of CA has everything in common with the Pac NW. Or it used to; I don't know what the weather up there is doing these days. But it used to be rainy, like OR & WA. I'd say the big green map above defines the Pac NW pretty accurately.

Re-reading Grumbler's description of what "Northern California" is, I don't agree completely.

By his definition, Mendocino, Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, Sacramento, Folsom Lake, Lake Bereyessa, Placerville, Auburn and Lake Tahoe would not be considered "Northern California", that's ridiculous,. Those places are very much self-identified as "Northern California".

The Highway that would separate "Northern California" from the PNW would be Highway 299, not Highway 20.

Everything north of Highway 299 to the Oregon border is also "Northern California" but also included in the PNW.
